Volunteer Awards

VINCE & VAL LAWS MEDAL

Football Canterbury inaugurated the Vince & Val Laws Medal in 2013. The first recipient was Mrs Grace Martin.

The Vince & Val Laws Medal is given to an individual who has been nominated for their outstanding contribution to the development of football in the Canterbury region.

It recognises a person who has been dedicated to football across their life time and has exceeded expectations of what would normally be expected of an individual.

Vince and Val Laws have been stalwarts of the Association and the Canterbury Lions Football Club.

Vince has been involved in the game for over seven decades as a player, coach, club official and as an office bearer of the Football Canterbury. Vince has been recognised by the Association in being awarded life membership in 1977. He is a life member of the Canterbury Lions Football Club. Additionally, Vince is the recipient of a FNSW State Award (1993) and also a Special State Recognition Award (2008). In 2019 Vince won the prestigious Football NSW George Churchward Medal, presented annually to an individual who has exemplified an outstanding commitment to the sport. CLICK HERE to read more.

Val Laws managed the Canteen for the Canterbury Lions Football Club for over five decades. Val has also served in various roles within the Canterbury Lions Football Club during those decades of service. Val was always at Canterbury’s home ground from early in the morning before games commenced and until after the last game finished on Saturday and Sunday afternoons.

The combined efforts and dedication of Vince and Val Laws over such an extended period is without parallel in the Canterbury region. They embody what community service spirit truly represents.  It is for this reason, the Board of Football Canterbury named this award after them.
