Bill Brackenbury Cup

The Bill Brackenbury Cup is the perpetual trophy awarded to the Champions of our highest division of senior men.

Mr William (Brackenbury’s place in the history of Football Canterbury is undeniable – he is a Life Member and inductee of the Hall of Fame – having served as the association’s Secretary/Treasurer continuously for a quarter of a century.

His legacy lends itself to other football bodies over a 44-year period including the former NSW Amateur Soccer Football Association and more importantly to the Hurlstone Park Wanderers Soccer Football Club for which he was a founding member (at age 16).

It is with distinction that Football Canterbury’s highest level of open men’s football is named after a gentleman that gave so much to the sport he loved – “Mr Soccer”, Bill Brackenbury.

The Player of the Match in the Grand Final is awarded the John Watkiss Medal.

John Watkiss is a Socceroo and was a member of the Australian team that competed at the 1974 FIFA World Cup.

Despite being born in England, Watkiss’ football career was entirely as an Australian: his development and youth football was as part of the Canterbury association, in particular the Canterbury-Marrickville club.

Watkiss was a star player at club, state, national, and international level. A midfielder with skills unparalleled at the time: a player his peers consider the best of a generation and unquestionably the best product of Football Canterbury.
