2023 is a record-breaking year for Football Canterbury with the association having more participants than ever before.
The never-before-seen numbers have surpassed 2021 as Football Canterbury’s biggest year ever with this season seeing registrations overtake the previous best mark of 17,388.

Following Covid, the 2021 season saw huge growth around the state with records breaking in most associations before taking a slight dip in 2022.
But a combination of the Socceroos’ World Cup success, the upcoming Women’s World Cup in Australia, and an off-season focus on marketing and recruitment has seen a growth of more than 1,000 from last season’s numbers and an increase of over 300 from our record season.
What is especially pleasing from a Football Canterbury perspective is that our region is growing faster than other areas: the average growth across all metro football associations since 2021 is only 32 players, showing just how big a jump our increase of 300+ is.
Football Canterbury Chairman, Nick Kambounias, said the large number of participants is a great sign for football in the region.
“An increase in participants is always a reason to celebrate as it means we get to share our love of football with more players, coaches, referees, and volunteers,” said Kambounias.
“The Canterbury region has been a historically strong region for football for over a century and it’s pleasing to see this trend continue with our growth far surpassing the average growth level since Covid.
“To attract more than 1,000 more participants than last season is a testament to our region’s love of football and the work done by the association and our clubs to provide a positive experience that so many people want to be part of.
“With so many new and returning players in our association this year, 2023 is the biggest season on record and we’re privileged to play our part in bringing enjoyment, health, and community to so many people.”
While the season has already started, registration is still open and there are plenty of clubs and teams looking to fill out their rosters.
