BBC Review - Round 2

Published Mon 19 Apr 2021

Another pulsating weekend of Bill Brackenbury Cup (BBC) football took place. There are now just two sides who hold a perfect record after three rounds while there are two teams who are still looking for their first points of the season at the other end of the spectrum.

Hurlstone Park and Enfield are the early pace setters this season while LFC Sports join them as the only three sides who are yet to taste defeat this season.

Meanwhile, Balmain and Cooks River Titans are still finding their way in the men’s premier competition with both sides yet to get off the mark so far.

A raft of absentees did not help Titans’ cause as they were forced to forfeit their weekend’s match against Marrickville.

Enfield Rovers – Inter Lions 4-1

Inter Lions were Enfield Rovers’ latest victim as they ran out 4-1 winners at Henley Park on Saturday afternoon.

Adrian Livio opened the scoring for Enfield on the quarter hour mark however Nick Paradisis brought it back to one-a-piece five minutes before halftime.

A quite even start to the second half saw both sides try to suss each other out before Ives Palma popped up with the home side’s second with 20 minutes left on the clock.

Enfield took the advantage in their stride and soon went 3-1 up thanks to James Spinola’s finish while Joseph Ferrone made sure of the victory with his finish in the final three minutes of the encounter.

Rovers can now look forward to a monster clash against fellow high-flyers Hurlstone Park while fourth placed Inter return to Ron Routley to host LFC who occupy third position.

Abbotsford Juniors – Strathfield 1-0

It was all smiles for the home side at Campbell Park on Saturday as they edged out Strathfield 1-0.

The only goal of the match arrived early on, courtesy of a fine Julian Rinaldi finish on seven minutes.

Strathfield did their best to break down Abbotsford’s defence. They did manage to hit the post on three occasions but it just was not their day as they succumbed to defeat.

Next up on the agenda for Strathfield is a home tie against Cooks Rivers while Abbotsford will be targeting back-to-back wins when they travel to Birchgrove to take on Balmain.

LFC Sports – Balmain DFC 2-1

A pinpoint free kick decided this encounter as LFC Sports triumphed 2-1 over Balmain under lights at Parry Park.

It took until the second half before the floodgates opened with Balmain’s Ryan Chomphunut adding the finishing touches to a slick counter attacking play for the visitors.

It all seemed smooth sailing for Balmain until LFC replied from a corner kick routine on 86 minutes with Aman Hadid getting the goal.

It was Hadid again who was at the centre of attention when his unstoppable free kick from just outside the 18-yard area made its way into Balmain’s goal to seal all three points for the men from Lakemba.

LFC will be on the road next Saturday as they travel to Inter while Balmain will be back at Birchgrove Oval to welcome Abbotsford.

Leichhardt Tigers Juniors – Hurlstone Park 0-4

An inspired performance from Hurlstone Park’s Frank Calcagno saw his side race to a comprehensive 4-0 victory against Leichhardt Tigers at Lambert Park.

Calcagno scored all four of his side’s goals on Saturday evening as he quickly races to the top of the BBC’s goalscoring leader board.

His first of the evening arrived after just six minutes and his second came shortly after on the 16th minute mark.

The away side kept hold of their 2-0 lead into the break before adding a third to their cause via Calcagno in the 47th minute.

Calcagno and his side did not take the foot off the pedal and were eventually rewarded with their fourth and final goal of the contest on the hour mark.

To Leichhardt’s credit, they kept on fighting until the very end but were unable to find a goal on their return to Lambert Park.

Hurlstone Park’s sternest test to date will arrive next round when they entertain Enfield meanwhile Tigers make the trip to Mackey Park to face off against Marrickville.
