BBC Review - Round 4

Published Mon 03 May 2021

There have been some changes in the standings as Enfield Rovers go outright leaders at the top of the table while special mention goes to Balmain as they registered their first competition win.

A surprise defeat for Hurlstone Park has paved the way for Enfield to stake their claim at the top of the table as they remain the only undefeated side left in the competition. While Balmain proved too strong for Strathfield as they came away with all three points for the first time this campaign.

Balmain DFC – Strathfield 3-1

It was a memorable afternoon for Balmain as they claimed their inaugural BBC victory over seasoned campaigners Strathfield at Birchgrove Oval.

Joe Birds opened the scoring from a slick cut back in the box on 14 minutes before the visitors equalised via Cathal Horan nine minutes later.

A determined Balmain regained their lead before half time with none other than Ryan Chomphunut getting on the scoresheet for the third week running.

A much stronger second half performance from Strathfield made life a whole lot more difficult for the hosts but to the away side’s dismay, they were unable to translate their dominance into goals on the scoreboard.

They paid the price when Birds arrived on the scene with the third goal to kill off the contest when he poked home following a skirmish in the box with five minutes left of play.

Next on the agenda for Balmain is a visit to Ron Routley as they go head to head against Inter.

Meanwhile, Strathfield will be back at home as they welcome Leichhardt Tigers.

LFC Sports – Hurlstone Park 2-1

A shock result occurred at Parry Park as LFC Sports became the first team to beat Hurlstone Park this season.

Aman Hadid opened the scoring for LFC with his strike on 18 minutes. The home side kept hold of that lead for most of the match until Francesco Giannetto put some daylight between the two sides as he made it 2-0 on the 83rd minute mark.

The visitors were able to respond through Frank Calcagno four minutes later but it was a matter of too little too late as they look to put this result behind them.

Their next chance to return to winning ways will be back at Ewen when they entertain Abbotsford while LFC head to Mackey to meet Marrickville.

Enfield Rovers – Marrickville 4-1

Enfield’s killer instinct in the attacking third proved too hot to handle for Marrickville with 4-1 the full-time score at Henley Park on Saturday afternoon.

Joey Ferrone and Nathan Spinola ran the show for Rovers with the two playmakers involved in three out of their four side’s goals.

Ferrone teed up both of Spinola’s goals which arrived in the 38th and 47th minute, respectively.

It was then Spinola’s turn to act provider for Ferrone as he set up his team mate for their third goal on 71 minutes.

Adrian Livio made it a fourth with his excellent finish two minutes later to wrap up the scoring for the home side.

However, that would not be the end of the goal mouth action with Marrickville clawing one back from an Indigo Castro penalty in the 76th minute.

Enfield are now outright leaders in the competition. They will be clear favourites to take all three points from their battle with bottom of the table Cooks River Titans next weekend.

Elsewhere, Marrickville will be at Mackey as they welcome a high on confidence LFC Sports side.

Abbotsford – Inter Lions 3-1

Abbotsford were the team left cheering at full time as they overcame Inter Lions 3-1 at Campbell Park.

The home side had to do it the hard way with Inter striking first through Peter Vassilis on five minutes.

Abbotsford soon levelled the scoring via Tyson Kay’s strike on the 21st minute mark before taking the lead for the first time on 63 minutes through John-Paul Foti.

A Luis Alberto Escalante strike with just over 10 minutes remaining sealed all three points for the hosts as they set their sights on a trip to Ewen to do battle with Hurlstone Park.

Meanwhile, fourth placed Inter return to Concord to face off against a resurgent Balmain outfit.

Leichhardt Tigers Juniors – Cooks River Titans 1-1

Neither side could be split at Lambert Park with 1-1 the score when the full time whistle blew on Saturday night.

Tigers were quick out of the blocks and found themselves 1-0 to the good after just six minutes thanks to Marcelo Turdera’s strike.

A lot of chances for both sides meant that were was plenty of action for the spectators to feast on, however it was not until the 85th minute that they were able to see the net bulge for a second time.

Only this time it was the Titans, namely Daniel Curro who restored parity and rescued a point for his side.

Cooks River can look forward to playing out of Gough Whitlam Park for the first time this season when they welcome Enfield while Leichhardt take on Strathfield in the late kick off on Saturday.
