Finals Series to be Extended if Necessary

Published Wed 03 Aug 2022

Following feedback from clubs on wanting to avoid a shortened finals series in 2022, Football Canterbury are exploring options to extend the season in cases where it is needed.

While football loses access to almost all grass fields at the end of August, the Association is in discussions with councils to extend the region’s use of three all-weather fields into September.

This would allow leagues affected by wet weather rainouts to complete a full three-week finals series, rather than a shortened one-week or two-week series.

After the disruptions of both the 2020 and 2021 seasons, Football Canterbury will do everything in its power to give its members a full 2022 season.

Following feedback from clubs, this includes doing everything possible to avoid a shortened finals series.

While many leagues will finish a full season in the original timeline, if the use of three all-weather fields in September is secured, it will allow leagues impacted by weather to complete a full finals series.

To clarify: this option will only be used when needed. If leagues can complete a full season by the end-of-August deadline, their finals series will not extend into September.
