Football Canterbury player numbers up 15% so far

2023 is going to be a bumper year for football in Canterbury with players around the region signing-up in droves.

Compared to the same point in 2022, registration numbers are up 15% this season.

There have been several factors that have people in the region excited for football in 2023, including:

  • Improvements in football facilities and pitches across the region
  • The World Cup success of the Socceroos
  • The upcoming Women’s World Cup in Australia
  • New clubs in the region
  • New and expanding leagues in the region

The 2023 season kicks-off on the weekend of 31 March / 1 April / 2 April but with most clubs already starting training and considering selections, it is no surprising to see players registering early to secure their spot.

In fact, eight clubs are already close to hitting their 2022 numbers: APIA Leichhardt JFC, Ashfield Pirates, Balmain DFC, Canterbury Lions, Concord JSC, Leichhardt Saints, Russell Lea Women’s SC, and Sydney Rangers.
