Football Canterbury players qualify for Asian Cup

Published Thu 20 Oct 2022

Players from Football Canterbury played a key role in the Young Socceroos qualification for the AFC U20 Asian Cup.

In fact, a third of Australia’s goals in the tournament were scored by Football Canterbury players as the Young Socceroos defeated Kuwait 4-1, India 4-1, and Iraq 1-0.

Adrian Segacic, a Canterbury Lions junior who now plays for Sydney FC, scored goals in the opening two games.

Nectar Triantis, another Canterbury Lions junior who is with Central Coast Mariners, scored in the opening game against host nation, Kuwait.

The three victories saw Australia top their group to earn direct qualification to next year’s Asian Cup in Uzbekistan.

With a strong overall squad and a healthy Football Canterbury representation, it is predicted that the Young Socceroos can go deep into the tournament.
