GMT Review – Round 9

Published Tue 08 Jun 2021

We were on the edge of our seats this weekend with plenty of action coming our way across the three GMT encounters.

ACU pulled off the result of the season as they inflicted the first blemish on Leichhardt Saints’ record. A spirited away performance from the competition’s newcomers saw them come away with a point as well as a clean sheet to boot for their efforts.

Keep reading to get the latest from all the fixtures that took place across Sunday.

Leichhardt Saints – ACU Football Club 0-0

A massive result played out at Balmain Road Sports Ground as ACU Football Club became the first team to spoil Saints’ previously perfect record.

A resolute display from ACU saw them withstand the runaway leaders and put on a show of their own as they kept a highly-prized away clean sheet.

The upcoming weekend off may be the last thing that the visitors want after what was a monumental result.

Next up for them will be a clash at home to Strathfield on June 20 while Leichhardt are back at Balmain Sporting Ground to host Hurlstone Park.

Russell Lea – Strathfield 0-1

Strathfield snapped out of a three game losing streak on Sunday as they edged out Russell Lea by the odd goal at Queen Elizabeth Park.

A Kat Haddad goal on the 35th minute mark proved to be decisive as the visitors leapfrogged Hurlstone Park into fourth on the ladder.

Meanwhile, it was a third defeat on the bounce for Russell Lea who remain rooted to the bottom of the table ahead of their meeting with Balmain in just under a fortnight’s time.

Strathfield’s next fixture sees them come up against and ACU side who will most likely still be on a high following their standout result.

Hurlstone Park – Balmain DFC 1-3

Balmain came away with all three points from an end-to-end encounter against Hurlstone Park on Sunday.

Balmain were missing players at kick off and forced to play the opening 20 minutes or so with 10 on the pitch.

Fortunately for them, Hurlstone Park were not able to capitalise on the advantage and the score remain locked at 0-0 until the break.

A free kick just after the interval then saw the visitors break ahead courtesy of Zoe Zagami in the 48th minute.

A 30-metre cracker for Zoe Kalos followed 15 minutes later before Alessia Gangemi added a third to her side’s cause only a matter of minutes later.

A late goal from Rika Millen proved to be mathematical as Balmain condemned Hurlstone Park to their second consecutive defeat.

The win helps Balmain slightly close the gap between themselves and Saints as they gear up for a ‘home’ fixture at Russell Lea while Hurlstone Park can look forward to a visit to the reigning champions.
