Clubs and councils in the Inner West / Football Canterbury region showed the rest of Sydney what football fans were capable of during the World Cup.
With the Socceroos taking on Tunisia at 9pm on a Saturday night, it was clubs and councils in our region that took the initiative and organised some of the few live sites in Sydney for the match.
Inspired by the scenes in the Inner West – and by the performance of the Socceroos – the public petitioned the NSW Government and City of Sydney to create major live site for the entire city to participate in.
The public pressure led to the creation of the Darling Harbour live site which saw thousands of football fans come together to create memorable scenes and lifetime moments (photo supplied by Director Ashleigh Campbell).
Well done to the entire football family and well done to our clubs and councils who made this happen.
Summer Hill
Inspired by a lack of venues to watch the Australia v Peru play-off, recently elected Football Canterbury director, Matthew Greenlaw organised a live site at Summer Hill through the Inner West Council.
Local residents, players, and football lovers – including Mayor Darcy Byrne – all came together to create an incredible atmosphere that surpassed all expectations.
It was photos and videos of the Summer Hill site which were used to create the pressure on the NSW Government for the Argentina live sites.
Footage of Summer Hill went worldwide: even featuring on BBC News.
Earlwood
Cooks River Titans and Hurlstone Park Wanderers hosted a live site for the Tunisia and Argentina matches at Beaman Park through the support of Canterbury Bankstown Council.
With a family-friendly atmosphere at both matches, Beaman Park was the perfect place to support both the Socceroos and two of our local clubs.
Enfield
Enfield FC held an event at Henley Park with lots of activities for the kids. The Mayor of Burwood Council, John Faker, also attended and handed out medals to Enfield’s successful Champion of Champions U16 Boys team.
