For the first time since they were formed in 1968, Strathfield FC have been named Crystal Cup winners.
The Crystal Cup is the perpetual trophy awarded to the annual Club Champions of Football Canterbury, and to be eligible a club must have a minimum of ten competitive teams.
From there, the club with the highest average points is crowned Crystal Cup winners. This year, that club was Strathfield FC who edged out fellow finalists APIA Leichhardt JFC, Belmore Eagles, Concord JSC, and Cooks River Titans.
The title of Club Champions is just rewards for a club who have recently undergone change at committee level.
Strathfield President, Michael Vertsonis, only came on board at the start of this year and was delighted with the on-field success.
“I’m absolutely thrilled and so proud of our committee, coaches, managers, players, and hardworking volunteers contributing to Strathfield FC taking out the Crystal Cup for the first time in the club’s 54-year history,” said Vertsonis.
Vertsonis says that developing the club’s unity and sense of community has been the focus of 2022 and has led directly to this achievement.
“It’s out people who have led us to win the Crystal Cup. The Strathfield FC family is a very strong community with dedicated members who are happy to turn up and do their part, week in and week out.
“The committee’s aim is to give our members a happy, safe, and controlled environment for all to enjoy the great game whilst building our player’s skills.”
The Club Championship was the perfect way to cap off Vertsonis’ first year as President.
“I’m so happy and grateful for all the support given to me in my first year as President. Without the great people involved in Strathfield FC we wouldn’t be where we are.”
