Club Referees

Have you ever had a game where the referee hasn’t turned up, or where no referee has been allocated to your game?

What ensues is often a panicked situation where you try to find someone at the club willing and able to referee as a “step-in referee”. This can be difficult as many people are reluctant to help out as a step-in referee as they often have no experience and/or limited knowledge on how to control a game as a match official.

Due to these situations, clubs have requested a free refereeing course for senior players so they can feel comfortable stepping-in when there is no referee at a game.

Football Canterbury has tasked the Canterbury Referees Association (CRA) with the delivery of a Community Club Referee Training Course, which is a free 90-minute course that provides individuals with basic football knowledge to step-in for games where no referees are available.

It’s a short crash course in refereeing (free of charge) in case you need to step-up during the season and is open to parents, players, coaches, managers, and anyone else who might be interested.

Summary

  • 90-minute course to provide you with basic education to assist if are called upon as a “step-in referee”
  • The course is free
  • Allows you to help out your club when one of their teams don’t have a referee

Please note: this does not qualify you to become an official referee and you cannot be officially appointed to matches. Attending this course is providing you with basic knowledge which will assist you to fill-in for matches where there is no referee.
